Turning the tide on child poverty

How can the next Welsh Government turn the tide on child poverty?

This webinar will build on WCPP’s tackling inequalities work, published research and expert insight, to explore how the next Welsh Government can best prevent and reduce child poverty, and support families experiencing financial hardship.

For the last two decades around 30% of children have been growing up in poverty in Wales. Whilst the recent UK Government decision to abolish the two-child limit on benefits is likely to reduce child poverty by around 3 to 4%, huge numbers of families across Wales will continue to struggle to make ends meet. The next Welsh Government will still face the challenge of unacceptably high levels of child poverty, and the knock-on effects of this on the wellbeing of current and future generations.

Our expert panel will explore:

  • What is the scale and nature of child poverty in Wales today, and how is this picture likely to evolve over the next Senedd term?
  • What can the next Welsh Government do to reduce the scale and depth of child poverty?
  • How can we strengthen local and community inclusion and support for families in poverty?

Confirmed speakers:

  • Helen Barnard, Director of Policy, Research & Impact, Trussell Trust
  • Karen Berrell, Co-production and lived experience expert, Poverty Insight Lab
  • Mike Brewer, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Economist, Resolution Foundation
  • Steffan Evans, CEO, Bevan Foundation
  • Amanda Hill-Dixon, Director of Policy & Practice (Public Services), Wales Centre for Public Policy

The discussion will be followed by a live Q&A with the audience.
