Net zero is much more than a climate target. It is an economic opportunity that can help Wales grow thriving local economies, reduce inequalities and secure better jobs for future generations. Environmental pressures are already affecting nature, communities and public health across Wales, and delaying action only raises future risks and costs.

Ahead of the 2026 Senedd election, we partnered with IWA to host a webinar series looking at key policy challenges for the incoming Welsh Government.

Building prosperous local economies through a just transition explored the opportunities created by the transition to net zero, considering how efforts to tackle climate change can help build a more prosperous, resilient and inclusive Wales.

We brought a panel of independent experts together to examine the following questions:

1. How can the net zero transition maximise opportunities for localities by building on the existing strengths of local economies?

2. What skills are needed to support businesses and communities to ensure that Wales makes the most of the opportunities afforded by the transition?
