How can councils support their communities through the cost-of-living crisis?

Location Venue Cymru, Llandudno
Date 14 September 2023

Fringe panel discussion, WLGA Annual Conference

The cost-of-living crisis is a major challenge for our communities and is hitting the poorest in society particularly hard. The need for help with basics such as food, fuel and clothing has never been higher. For example, the Trussell Trust network food banks distributed 41% more food parcels in the year to March 2023 than in the previous 12 months. But council budgets are under severe pressure.

So realistically what can we do support communities through this crisis?

We are joined at this fringe event by a panel of expert speakers from local government and research organisations. We will discuss:

  • What are councils doing to support people in poverty?
  • What more can they and their local partners do?
  • And what do we know about what works best?

Chair: Dan Bristow, Director of Policy & Practice, Wales Centre for Public Policy

Panel members:
Amanda Hill-Dixon, Senior Research Fellow, Wales Centre for Public Policy
Councillor Lis Burnett, Leader, Vale of Glamorgan Council
Councillor Nia Jeffreys, Deputy Leader, Gwynedd Council
Jo Harry, Wales Network Lead, Trussell Trust
